Canvas Users: How Do Students View Assignments?

Updated June 30th, 2026

The student can access the assignment by clicking on the title, which will open the assignment. To navigate between pages, the student can use the pagination at the top or bottom of the assignment screen.

The Tools dropdown will appear only when the screen resolution is lower. On larger screens or higher resolutions, these options will be displayed directly within the test as Accessibility Tools instead of a dropdown.

Also, the student will be allowed to use the Tools on the right side of the application. Clicking on the Tools dropdown will display the Accessibility tools for the student to select and use in the assignment.

Example 1: Usage of Highlighter tool in the assignment.

Example 2: Adding Assignment Notes to an assignment.

Example 3:  To eliminate answer choices in Single Select or Multi-Select questions, click Eliminate Options from the Annotation Tools section under the Accessibility Tools panel on the right side of the screen.

The student completes the questions on the assignment and, when ready, hit the Submit as Completed button for submitting the assignment for grading.

The student can view the grades of auto-graded assignments. For teacher-graded assignments like Study guides, Vocabulary Builders etc., the grades will be displayed once the teacher manually grades the assignment.
